Can I Change My Companies House Personal Code?
By Deevan Naveed · October 2026 · 5 min read

Under normal circumstances, you cannot change your Companies House personal code. The code is issued once and is intended to be permanent. Here is what you need to know about when and whether a new code might be issued.
Why the code is permanent
Your personal code is tied to your verified identity. It serves as a consistent link between you and your company roles across the entire Companies House register. Changing it frequently would undermine this purpose and create confusion in the records.
Can you request a new code?
Companies House may issue a new personal code in exceptional circumstances, such as:
- Evidence that your code has been compromised or used fraudulently
- A significant legal name change that affects your identity records
- Technical errors in the original code issuance
These situations are uncommon. In most cases, you will keep the same personal code for the foreseeable future.
What if you just do not like your code?
Personal codes are randomly generated and cannot be customised or changed for preference reasons. The format is functional, not decorative.
What if your name changes?
If your legal name changes (through marriage, divorce or deed poll), you should update your details at Companies House. In most cases, your existing personal code will remain valid - the code is linked to your identity, not just your name. However, if the change creates a verification issue, Companies House will advise on whether a new code is needed.
Keeping your code secure
Since you cannot easily replace your personal code, keeping it secure is important. Store it in a password manager, share it only through secure channels, and report any suspected compromise to Companies House immediately.
If you have not yet verified, start your verification with Companies House ID Verification to receive your personal code.
