Companies House Identity Verification Requirements Explained
By Deevan Naveed · October 2026 · 8 min read

The Companies House identity verification requirements define what you need to provide and what the checks look for. This guide explains the requirements clearly so you can prepare before starting.
Who must meet these requirements
The requirements apply to every individual who must verify their identity with Companies House: directors, PSCs, LLP members and authorised filers. Visit who needs to verify for the full eligibility criteria.
Identity document requirements
You must provide a valid, current photo identity document. Through GOV.UK One Login, only a UK passport or UK driving licence is accepted. Through an ACSP such as Companies House ID Verification, the following documents are typically accepted:
- Passports - UK or international, must be current and not expired
- National identity cards - issued by EEA or other countries with machine-readable features
- UK driving licences - photocard style, current and not expired
The document must contain a clear photograph, your full legal name, your date of birth and a machine-readable zone where applicable. Check our requirements page for the detailed list.
Personal information requirements
You will need to provide:
- Your full legal name - as it appears on your identity document
- Your date of birth
- Your current residential address
- Your nationality
- The company number for each company where you hold a qualifying role
Name matching
One of the most important requirements is that your name on your identity document must match the name on the Companies House register. Discrepancies in spelling, middle names, maiden names or titles can prevent your personal code from being linked to your role.
If there is a mismatch, you may need to update your details at Companies House before verification. Companies House ID Verification can advise on how to handle name discrepancies.
Liveness check requirements
The liveness check requires you to use a device with a working camera. You will take a real-time photo or short video that is compared to the photograph on your identity document. Requirements for the check:
- Good lighting - avoid backlighting or harsh shadows
- Face fully visible - remove hats, sunglasses or face coverings
- Stable camera - hold the device steady or place it on a surface
- Clean lens - ensure the camera is not obscured
Technical requirements
The process is completed online. You need:
- A device with internet access (computer, tablet or smartphone)
- A camera for the liveness check
- A way to photograph or scan your identity document
- A valid email address for account creation and notifications
Meet the requirements
Once you have your documents ready, start your verification with Companies House ID Verification. The process is guided, costs £19 per person, and accepts UK and international documents. Visit the FAQ for more answers.
