Companies House Personal Code Not Working: How to Fix It

If your Companies House personal code is not working, there are several common causes and fixes. This guide covers the most likely reasons and how to resolve each one.

Common cause 1: Typing errors

The personal code is 11 characters long, with a mix of letters and numbers. It is easy to confuse similar characters (the letter O and the number 0, the letter I and the number 1). Double-check each character carefully and try again.

Common cause 2: Name mismatch

Your personal code is linked to the name used during verification. If the name on the Companies House register is different - a missing middle name, different spelling, or a name change - the code may not link correctly. Check the register and update it if necessary before retrying.

Common cause 3: Wrong filing window

You can only provide your personal code during specific filing windows. For directors, this is typically during the confirmation statement. For PSCs, it is during the 14-day window. If you are outside the window, the system may not accept the code yet.

Common cause 4: Code not yet active

If your verification was very recently completed, there may be a short delay before the code is active in all Companies House systems. Wait a few hours and try again.

Common cause 5: Using the wrong code

Make sure you are entering your personal code (11 characters, linked to your identity) and not the company’s authentication code (6 characters, used for filing). These are different codes for different purposes.

What to do if none of these fixes work

  1. Verify the exact code issued to you by checking the original email or your verification account
  2. Check that your name on the Companies House register matches your verified name exactly
  3. Contact the ACSP that verified you, or Companies House directly, for assistance
