Companies House Verification Error: Common Problems and Solutions
By Deevan Naveed · October 2026 · 9 min read

Encountering a Companies House verification error is more common than you might think. Most errors have straightforward solutions. This guide covers the most frequent error types and how to resolve each one.
Error type 1: Document upload errors
Document upload errors occur when the system cannot process your submitted identity document.
- File too large — reduce the image size. Most systems accept files up to 10MB. A clear phone photo is usually sufficient.
- Wrong file format — submit in JPEG, PNG or PDF format. Screenshots, HEIC files or edited images may be rejected.
- Image too dark or blurry — retake the photo with better lighting and ensure the camera is focused on the document.
- Document not recognised — the system could not detect a valid identity document in the image. Ensure the entire document is visible, with no fingers covering the edges.
Error type 2: Session and timeout errors
- Session expired — the verification session timed out. Prepare all your documents and information before starting so you can complete the process without long pauses.
- Connection lost — a dropped internet connection during upload or the liveness check. Use a stable Wi-Fi connection.
- Page not loading — clear your browser cache, disable extensions and try again. If using a mobile device, try switching to a desktop browser or vice versa.
Error type 3: Liveness check errors
- Camera not found — grant camera permissions in your browser settings. On mobile, ensure the browser app has camera access in your device settings.
- Face not detected — ensure good lighting, remove obstructions (glasses, hats) and position yourself centrally in the frame.
- Multiple faces detected — ensure you are alone in the camera frame. Background posters or photos of people can trigger this error.
- Movement detected — hold still during the liveness check. Rest your device on a stable surface if possible.
Error type 4: Data validation errors
- Company number not found — double-check the 8-digit company number. Companies House company numbers are always 8 characters (including leading zeros).
- Person not found on register — confirm you are listed as a current director or PSC for the company number you entered.
- Details do not match — your name or date of birth does not match the register. Check and correct as needed.
When to try a different approach
If you have tried multiple times and continue to receive errors:
- Switch browsers or devices
- Try at a different time (some systems have peak usage periods)
- Switch verification routes (from GOV.UK One Login to an ACSP, or vice versa)
