How Does Companies House Verification Affect Existing Directors?

By Deevan Naveed · October 2026 · 7 min read

Existing company director reviewing new verification requirements

If you were already a director before 18 November 2025, Companies House verification affects you during the transition period. This guide covers what changes, what stays the same, and what you need to do.

The transition period

Existing directors have until November 2026 to complete identity verification. During the transition period, you can continue to act as a director, file documents and manage your company as normal. Verification becomes mandatory when your individual deadline arrives.

What changes after verification

Once you verify and provide your personal code:

  • Your directorship is linked to your verified identity on the register
  • You will need to provide your personal code in future confirmation statements
  • Your status on the register changes to “verified”

What does not change

  • Your directorship itself - verification does not affect your appointment
  • Your powers as a director - you retain all existing authority
  • Your company’s structure or operations

How to find your deadline

Your individual deadline is linked to your company’s confirmation statement date. You can check this on the Companies House register or through the official deadline guidance.

What happens if you do not verify by the deadline

After your deadline, the consequences described above apply - register notation, filing restrictions and criminal liability. There is no automatic extension.

The recommended approach

Verify early. The process is straightforward - about 15 minutes through Companies House ID Verification, at a fixed £19. Completing it now removes the deadline pressure and ensures your personal code is ready when needed.
