How to Use Your Companies House Personal Code

Director using their Companies House personal code for a filing

Receiving your Companies House personal code is only part of the process. You must also provide it for each company role you hold. This guide explains exactly how and where to use your personal code.

Where to provide your personal code

You provide your personal code through the Companies House online services. The exact method depends on your role:

For directors

Directors provide their personal code as part of the company’s confirmation statement. When filing the annual confirmation statement, you will be prompted to enter your personal code to link it to your directorship. This must be done for each company where you are a director.

For PSCs

PSCs use a dedicated service on the Companies House website to link their personal code to each PSC position. The 14-day window for providing your code is typically linked to your birth month or the company’s confirmation statement date. See the official deadline guidance for your specific dates.

For LLP members

LLP members provide their personal code through the LLP’s confirmation statement, in the same way as company directors.

For new appointments

If you are being appointed as a new director or PSC, your personal code must be provided as part of the appointment filing. Companies House will not register the appointment without a verified personal code.

Sharing your code with an accountant or agent

If your accountant or company secretary files on your behalf, they will need your personal code to complete the filing. Share it securely - not by plain-text email. Use encrypted messaging, a secure portal or a phone call.

Can you use the code immediately?

Yes. Once issued, your personal code can be used straight away. There is no waiting period. However, you can only provide it during the correct filing window - for existing directors, this is at the next confirmation statement; for PSCs, during their 14-day window.

What if the code does not work?

Common reasons for a code not being accepted include typing errors, name mismatches on the register, or attempting to provide the code outside the permitted window. Check the code carefully and ensure your details match the Companies House register exactly.
