Is Companies House Identity Verification Free?
By Deevan Naveed · October 2026 · 6 min read

Companies House identity verification can be completed for free through GOV.UK One Login, but the free route has significant limitations. Here is what you need to know about the free option and when a paid service makes more sense.
The free route: GOV.UK One Login
Companies House allows you to verify your identity for free through GOV.UK One Login, the government’s digital identity service. You create an account, verify using a UK passport or UK driving licence, and receive your personal code - all at no charge.
Limitations of the free route
GOV.UK One Login currently has several restrictions:
- Document types - only UK passports and UK driving licences are accepted. No international passports, no national ID cards, no other documents.
- Self-service only - there is no guided assistance. You must navigate the process yourself.
- Technology requirements - you need a smartphone with a working camera for the identity check. Desktop-only users may face difficulties.
- No support for name discrepancies - if your name on your ID does not match the Companies House register, the free route will not help you resolve it.
When a paid service is the better option
A paid service through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) is typically the right choice if:
- You hold an international passport or non-UK identity document
- You live outside the UK
- You want guided assistance through the process
- Your name on your ID does not match the Companies House register
- You are verifying on behalf of multiple directors at a company
- You prefer to have the process handled by a professional service
How much does a paid service cost?
Companies House ID Verification charges a fixed £19 per person - no hidden fees, no tiers. This covers the complete guided process including identity checks, document verification and personal code guidance. Visit our pricing page for full details.
Is the result the same?
Yes. Whether you verify through GOV.UK One Login or through an ACSP, the result is identical: a verified identity and an 11-character Companies House personal code. Companies House does not distinguish between the two routes on the register.
Start your verification through Companies House ID Verification, or try the free GOV.UK One Login route first and come back if you need assistance.
