What Happens If I Lose My Companies House Personal Code?

By Deevan Naveed · October 2026 · 6 min read

Person concerned about a lost Companies House personal code

Losing your Companies House personal code does not mean you need to start verification again from scratch. Here is what to do and how to prevent it happening again.

Your code still exists

When you lose your personal code, the code itself has not been cancelled or invalidated. It was issued to you by Companies House and remains on record. The challenge is simply recovering it.

How to recover a lost personal code

  1. Check your emails - search for the original notification from Companies House or your ACSP
  2. Log in to your verification account - your code may be displayed in the account dashboard
  3. Contact your ACSP - if you verified through an ACSP, they should be able to help you retrieve it
  4. Check your GOV.UK One Login account - if you verified through GOV.UK One Login, your code should be accessible there
  5. Contact Companies House - Companies House can help you recover access to your personal code

Should you be worried about security?

If you have simply mislaid the code rather than had it stolen, the security risk is low. However, if you believe someone else may have obtained your personal code without authorisation, contact Companies House to report the concern and seek guidance on next steps.

How to prevent losing it again

  • Save it in a password manager (the most secure and convenient option)
  • Record it in a locked digital note or encrypted document
  • If you must write it down, store the paper in a secure location
  • Share it with your accountant only through secure channels

Do you need to re-verify?

In most cases, no. Your verification is still valid and your code is still active. Re-verification would only be necessary if Companies House cancels the original code and requires a new one, which is unusual.

If you have not yet verified, start your verification now with Companies House ID Verification.
