What Is a Companies House Verification Code?
By Deevan Naveed · October 2026 · 6 min read

The term “Companies House verification code” is commonly searched, but it can refer to different things. This guide clarifies what verification codes exist, which one you need, and how each one works.
The personal code (identity verification)
The most relevant code for identity verification is the Companies House personal code. This is an 11-character alphanumeric code issued after you verify your identity under ECCTA. It links your verified identity to your company roles (directorships, PSC positions, LLP memberships).
This is the code you need if you have been asked to “verify your identity” or “provide your personal code” for a confirmation statement or appointment.
The authentication code (company filing)
The Companies House authentication code is a 6-character code used to file documents online for a specific company. It is issued to the company, not to an individual. If you are a director or authorised filer, you may use this code to submit filings on the Companies House WebFiling service.
The authentication code is not the same as the personal code. You need both: the personal code to prove your identity, and the authentication code to file documents for the company.
One-time verification codes
During the verification process, you may also encounter one-time codes sent by email or text message to confirm your email address or phone number. These are temporary security codes used during account setup, not permanent identification codes.
Which code do you need?
- Asked to verify your identity? - you need a personal code (from identity verification)
- Asked to file a confirmation statement? - you need both your personal code and the company’s authentication code
- Asked for a company authentication code? - this is a company-level code, available through the Companies House WebFiling service
